Jim Rodey has been involved with Labrador Retrievers since childhood. The family owned and hunted over Labs, setting the desire for Jim's future involvement with the breed. After training a number of retrievers, Jim set out on a plan to develop quality Labradors that would be a great asset to the upland and waterfowl hunter, while maintaining the ability to fit in with the home environment. Rodey Farms was officially born in 1989 with the acquisition of MERLIN.
In 1991, Jim spent time as a professional trainer. Returning to amateur status in 1992, Jim continued to train his personal dogs while developing a breeding program. Numerous dogs from Rodey Farms have gone on to hunting homes, while many have pursued the challenges of competition.
Jim's breeding program, as well as his training techniques have been developed over the years. In a constant goal to improve both the breed and himself, he has never stopped learning. Utilizing the best sources in the business, studying pedigrees, watching other trainers and even judging hunt tests have helped in that development.
